On Human Cruelty

As most of you, I too read the newspaper while excreting waste from my body but today, I could not help but connect some dots. The first dot was the many news of human cruelty and the second was a reference to what John Maynard Keynes once wrote (will paraphrase later). The violence in question are as follows –
# War in Sri Lanka; Urdu daily editor hurt in attack
# Tribals duped; Threat to Ridley turtles; College building demolished
# Girl attacks lover, chops off fingers
# Orissa father chains mental son for 10 years
# Modi minister remark sparks row in Gujarat
# Girl beheaded at Virgina Tech
# Man goes on stabbing spree at Daycare in Belgium
# Prison for ‘Female Fritzl’ (Irish woman who raped and abused her 5 children)
# Queen’s gaurdsman attacks cheeky youth
# Snowball fight turns violent
# New York landlord removes toilet to force tenant out
# Woman in Pennsylvania animal cruelty of ‘gothic kittens’ (piercings)
# Pak suicide bombing; Quaeda urges Muslims to attack West
# 45 whales beached off Aussie island
# UK man kills wife over single Facebook status
# Taliban slays teacher for not hiking up ‘salwar’
# Diplomatic war over film between Nepal and India
# TRAI has no jurisdiction in tele row
# First innings battle delicately poised (cricket story)
Phew! Crazy isn’t it? The number of articles about crimes and reference to anger in the headlines. Even sport is seen in such a lens. And this is just a cursory glance at a single day of one newspaper.

So, to take a leaf out of Keynes, humans are no less violent than today. Our minds are no less cruel, our ideas and actions no less bloody than they were last week or last month or last year or last decade or last century or last millenium or last calendar or last evolutionary step or last planet forming or last big bang. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing in remorse and putting in corrective measures – that time has surely passed.
The resources of machinery and men’s actions are just as fierce and warring as they were. The rate of our progress towards peace and well-being of life is not less slow. We are as capable as before of inflicting pain of a high standard to a fellow human, animal and country. But today we have involved ourselves in a colossal muddle, having blundered in the control of a delicate machine viz. the human mind and its insatiable appetite for hurting others – the working of which we do not yet understand nor strive to.
